September 28, 2009,
To “serve” is not the same as to “volunteer”, so why was the word “serve” selected in Obama’s Serve.gov? Is there more to this, or is it simply a name?
I realize readers know the definition of the word “serve”; however, I believe its adds emphasis when making a point.
Serve -- 1 a : to be a servant to, b : to give the service and respect due to (a superior) c : to comply with the commands or demands of, d : to give military or naval service to e : to perform the duties of (an office or post)
To be “a servant”? To “give service and respect due to a superior”? Now let’s review the definition of the word volunteer.
Volunteer -- 1 : a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service: as a : one who enters into military service voluntarily b (1) : one who renders a service or takes part in a transaction while having no legal concern or interest.
The word “volunteer” includes “willingness” and “voluntary”. So with these definitions in mind, wouldn’t it be more appropriate to use Volunteer.gov, unless of course the word “serve” better represents President Obama’s intentions.
Interestingly, should one enter the web address Volunteer.gov, you’ll be redirected to Serve.gov. There is a volunteer.gov site, but one has to enter www.volunteer.gov/gov?
Then President-elect Barack Obama’s “Renew America Together” initiative officially launched a Web site on Martin Luther King Day, January 19, 2009, to help people answer the call. Obama’s inauguration is the following day.
The Web site, www.USAservice.org, will allow people to offer their time or resources and be contacted by people in the community who need that type of help. CNN
USAservice.org also redirects browsers to Serve.gov.
The name “Serve” may not seem too alarming, but after considering some of the recent Obama administration recalls, and viewing the paramilitary style video above, the cause for concern becomes more apparent.
Below is a list of Obama administrative actions that were recalled due to public outrage.
The above items were so disturbing that it caused the public to voice their outrage en masse, and this is why “Serve.gov” is not the same as “Volunteer.gov”. Is there something to this? Again, why not call it Volunteer.gov in the first place?
On the government web page, under the section “Additional Opportunities” one will find the first two choices—AmeriCorps and Citizen Corp. You’ll remember Americorps helps fund Public Alliance. Public alliance is the Left wing training center chartered by Barack Obama, and later the employer of Michelle Obama.
You’ll also remember the outrage created when Americans discovered that September 11th would be recognized as a “National Day of Service and Remembrance” instead of an exclusive day of remembrance. Below is what Barack and Michelle’s United We Serve states about September 11th. The summer initiative will culminate on September 11, 2009, a National Day of Service and Remembrance, but United We Serve is ongoing. The National Day of Service and Remembrance will recognize the summer’s accomplishments, honor those who died on September 11, 2001 by serving in their memory, and encourage Americans to make an ongoing commitment to service.

The term “Service” carries a higher value than “Volunteering.” To “serve one’s country” is generally viewed as a more meaningful thing than “volunteering your time.” Doing “service” is not the same thing as “volunteering” though you could (while not being necessary) volunteer your service.
Almost all presidents over the last hundred years or so have used the term “Serve” and “Service” in such a manner, and we have yet to find any form of secret neo-Fascism in their intent. So I think we’re pretty safe from this particular president as well.
Oh, and I don’t understand the importance of the three red flags that you mentioned. Where did you copy-and-paste it from, so that we can read the whole thing in its original context?
PP13, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country”. I see this as volunteering, you might see this as serving?
I’m laughing about the copy and paste statement. No…I didn’t have to copy and paste those three examples. First of all, I know a couple of people who recieved the David Axelrod White House email.
You’re also familiar with President Obama’s suggested curriculum for the school children. In fact, I’m certain you read it before it was removed.
And I know you remember flag@whitehouse.gov created to tell on your neighbor.
These are real life examples. I didn’t have to copy and paste them from worthy news sources like msnbc, The New York Times, or CNN.
Conservatives should follow the examples set by Liberals–Public Allies, ACORN, and Americorps–and accept Federal funding to create Conservative organizations in disguise and call them Happy America (HA), Community Organizing and Neighborhood Giving Opportunities (CONGO), and Volunteer to Serve (V2S).
You bet it’s more than mere words! Obama’s goal is a mandatory national service requirement for every American citizen, and the battle to implement this is well under way. But while the administration is distracting us by waving serve.gov in our faces, the real attack plan is being mounted through our schools. Mandatory community service requirements are being imposed on students at every grade level. Soon you will not be able to get an education without having first “volunteered” to do your “mandatory” service. And once this precedent has been set, you can bet that the requirements for more and more service throughout our life will continue to be imposed.
I have an entire website devoted to this movement and I invite you to take a look (See below). There is a running blog with posts concerning national service issues that are cropping up across this country and around the world like the plague. There is also a pledge initiative that you can sign to add your voice to those of us opposed to the government’s intrusion into our personal lives and the erosion of our individual rights.
